What is Alpaca ?

Alpacas are beautiful, quiet and cam animals. They are not very social towards humans, but not afraid.

Alpacas are related to Lamas and Camels, but they are smaller than the Lama. There is about 3 million Alpacas in the world today. Alpacas are divided into two types, Suri-Alpaca and Huacaya-Alpaca. Suri counts about 4-5% of the total amount of Alpacas. The Alpacas we got on our farm is Huacaya. The difference between the two types is mainly that the Suri has got longer, hanging fibres while the Huacaya has got more fluffy fur. The Alpaca can get 20-25 years old and will produce 3-6 kg fibre each year. The female is called "Hembras", the male "Macho" and the baby is called "Cria". These names come from the Spanish language.

Alpacas are a typical group-animal, and they have a strict hirearchy within the group. Spitting is common when the Alpacas fight for the 1st position at the feeding trey. The Alpaca communicate with each other using a series of different "humming" sounds. They are social and should never be less than two in a group.

The female become mature between 12-14 months, while the male becomes ready at the age of 1,5-3 years. It takes 10- 12 months before the cria is borne, and it's usually only one.
